I own 3 DNP (DS-80, DS40 & DS620) & 2 sony dye sub printers for business. These dye sub printers are brilliant for event photograhers printing on site, amusement parks, photo booths etc Very good printers if you want to produce 8x10 or 8x12 prints of high quality quickly. The paper for the DS80 is actually very decent and I have no complaints.Īt some point for a future purchase, I would like to add a low cost inkjet with 4 high capacity refillable tanks and try calibrating it with the colormunki to see what results I get. The only thing I miss is having the ability to use different kinds of paper. From my previous experience, I most likely would have gone through a set of inks already that cost $100+. I've also printed 4 4x5s on a single 8x10 sheet. I have already printed about 2 dozen 8x10s at a price of 90 cents per print. I sometimes think did I make the right decision by purchasing a dye-sub printer vs an inkjet? I then look at the prices of ink and shake. I need to have accurate colors because I will be using DxO's Filmpack to make digital prints look like film. I have ordered a colormunki photo calibration kit, hopefully it will solve this problem. I've tried the latest icc profiles from the manufacturer's website and still no luck. There is too much magenta and yellows look more like gold color. I purchased the DS80 and I am very happy with it although it's icc color profile has some serious issues. These are my experiences with dye subs and ink jets and your mileage may vary greatly. But at least I have his cell number and after 2 years, he still helps me with issues that turn out to be my ignorance. I finally went with another company and have discovered a few "glitches there too. I understand their newer version has a green restore function, but have not tried the demo as I wasted hours on the old "trial" when you could not use your own "real world" photos. Their only GS demo was shot under ideal conditions with a dark haired model not wearing green.

The demo I downloaded was so crippled when I bought software I was scared away. And almost any printer issue not using Express Darkroom is blamed on software. They promote their own software so heavily it is very annoying. They are just like Sinfonia, blaming other software for printer issues. I have no affiliation with IS, and actually have some issues with them. They always seem to have an excuse for delayed jobs at top dollar. Not including shipping I am actually trying to add one for my daycare work as labs take forever and have raised prices. I just id basic math and it would take about 800 prints to break even at an 8x10 outside lab cost of $2.00. On sales at Imaging Spectrum for $895.00 and media on sale that works out to about $.75 a print.

I can buy a refurbed 610 with full cartridges for 49.00 with free shipping.įor 8x10 dye subs, I would look at the Sinfonia CE2. New ink would be 61.00 for standard or 99.00 for XL. midway through the 4th booklet of 12 pages the low ink reminder came on the XP620. I do many CDs for clients and the silver CDs look very professional. This is my 3rd Artisan 50 and they are always clogging and no longer available. I bought this because my Epson Artisan 50 is having CD tray issues AGAIN. My inkjets do not give a hoot what they are plugged into.
All dye subs MUST be plugged into the same USB port every time. Take it down and move it and something goes wonky. You can set it all up and test it before the event.

I do not care who you are, what brand of printer or you go mac or pc, or event software you use, you are going to have glitches. He has been in the business for quite some time.

I did have some initial issues with drivers and then with them breaking 5x7 ribbons, but those seem to have gone away. Clients have actually called me loving the prints. They basically heat the overcoat a little more, giving it a matte look and taking a few seconds more. I went with the sinfonia as it was much less expensive at the time.
